The curtains came down on the Sixth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships on August 21, 2011 at the world famous Gleason Gym.  The tournament was well represented by boxers from throughout the North Eastern Region of the United States including, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Virginia and host state New York.  We saw some of the finest amateur prospects in the tournament getting an opportunity to hone in their skills and improve their game.

Light Weight Titus Williams who resides in Elmont will be awarded the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities scholar athlete of the year and will receive a scholarship valued at $2000.00 to assist him to pay his tuition.  The business and finance major at SUNY @ Old Westbury, Williams won the 132 lb open division after defeating previous champion, Marlon Brown, in dramatic fashion in the semi final and went on to defeat Dave Meloni in the finals.

The Seventh Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships has already received sanction and will return to the oldest boxing gym in America, Gleason’s Gym.  The four day tournament is scheduled for August 9 through 12, 2012.  Applications will be out after December 31, 2011 and will be posted on our web site at www.liamateurboxing.com.  Please visit our web site for up dates on the tournament and other activities.

UP AND COMING BOXER ON LONG ISLAND

2009 Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities Scholar athlete Patrick Day will be returning to the Sixth Annual Tournament at Gleason gym in August seeking to regain the 141 open male title.  Last year, the two time finalist lost on a close decision to Boston’s Gabriel Duluc who is currently campaigning in the Pro’s. According to Day, “this is my home and I am looking to protect my turf and keep the 141 lb title where it belongs, back to Long Island.”  Day applauded the organizers of the tournament for putting on a well planned tournament and rates it among the best.

Day is a three time New York Metro Champion and this year’s North East regional finalist who continues to train hard with hopes of representing the United States at the Olympic Games. Day is very realistic about his chances, and acknowledges that the window of opportunity is narrowing for making the final cut of the United States team.  He remains dedicated and maintains great boxing shape for a tournament such as the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships so that when the bell rings and his name is called, he will answer.    According to Day the tournament is “highly competitive and with a four consecutive days schedule, means that you have to be on your A Game every day, injury or not and box through what ever slump you may be going through.”

In August 2009, Patrick Day was one of two Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities Inc’ Scholarship award recipient.  Day is a food and nutrition major, at Nassau Community College and has completed his first year of school.  Day thanks the LIABC & C for the scholarship and according to him, “it was a great financial help in assisting with books and material for school”.  In expressing his gratitude Day states “as a recipient of the scholarship it means a great deal to me, it gave me a start and helped to make college affordable and allows me to continue to pursue my goal of being a world’s champion and having a career in Nutrition”.

November 20, 2010
November 20, 2010:  York College was the scene for an exciting night of boxing. This event was organized by the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities, Inc. (LIABC&C), and was the culmination of an International Exchange Program sponsored by the LIABC&C and the Dominican Republic Amateur Boxing Federation, which is a member of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA).

LIABC&C's International Exchange Program gave many of New York's finest amateur boxers' opportunities to battle members of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic's national teams. All the matches were very competitive, but in the end boxers from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic were victorious.

The only Americans to taste the sweet flavor of victory were Mr. Nick Withingham and Mr. Tyrell Wright. According to Mr. Michael Carryl, LIABC&C President and CEO, this event will occur annually, and next year our boxers will have the opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic and face other amateurs in international competition.

I look forward to seeing you at the Fifth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships.  Good luck to all the participants and have a safe competition.

August 16, 2010
The Fifth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships will finally get on its way on August 18th after a long contested battle for sanctioning of the tournament.  The Five Towns Community Center located at 270 Lawrence Avenue, Lawrence, New York will again be the host of the fastest growing amateur boxing tournament in the North Eastern region of the United States.  USA BOXING METRO is the local sub association that has jurisdiction on the Long Island and New York City regions, has been denying the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities Inc., the organization that ran the tournament in its short four year history, sanctioning of the event.  Local organizers sought the assistance of USA BOXING, the governing body of amateur boxing in the United States, with no avail.  They then summoned the help of former baseball commissioner, Peter Ueberroth, who is now president of the USOC (United States Olympic Committee) who immediately intervened and brought an end to the saga.  Thanks to the intervention of the USOC the long Island tournament remains alive.

This four-day tournament has grown precipitously in the past four years where over 300 boxers participated in last year’s event. Boxers from the New England States, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington DC and Connecticut have already sent in their applications for the battle of Long Island.  Long Island boxers are guarding their territory and four champions from the Freeport PAL will return to the tournament this year to defend their titles.  Joseph Higgins, Coach of the Freeport PAL has been hard at work preparing his young charges for this very competitive tournament.  According to Joe “his charges take this tournament very seriously, they feel no one will come in their house and beat them to become champion of Long Island.” Among the defending champions are: Christian Chavez, Titus Williams, Patrick Day, Herve Dueroso, and Kalib Walker.

The Suffolk gyms are being well represented in the tournament.  According to Coach Mike Murphy who runs the Veterans Memorial and Atlantic boxing gyms in Shirley, “six of his boxers are returning to the tournament and there will be seven new comers who will be looking to lay claim to the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships”.  Brentwood’s presence will be felt as Coach John Carter, who runs the Suffolk PAL entesr fourteen of his young aspiring boxers in the Fifth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships.

Weigh in for boxers will take place at 5:30 PM on all four nights and the first bout starts at 7:30 PM sharp.  For ticketing information, log on to www.liamateurboxing.com.

Many coaches, boxers, and fans have being asking, When will the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities host its Annual Boxing Tournament?"   I feel at this time it is fitting to inform the public of the status and plans for the Fifth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities.  Deni Auclair and a few of her cronies in USA Boxing Metro have been sabotaging the tournament since the second year of its existence.  The Golden Gloves Show which the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities Inc (LIABC&C) hosted at the Five Towns Community Center on February 17, 2010 is symptomatic of their agenda to destroy the tournament.  Below I will bring your attention to the most recent outrageous acts of sabotage that Deni Auclair and her collaborators have launched against the LIABC&C.  As the Communication Secretary of LIABC&C, I am happy to inform our supporters that the organization will exercise all of its legal and Constitutional options to protect what we have worked to build for the youth and communities.  At this juncture, LIABC&C has filed a grievance with the governing body of boxing in the United States---i.e, USA Boxing--- and we are pursuing other remedies.

LIABC&C is being denied the right to participate as evidenced by Deni Auclair's manipulation of USA Boxing Metro, which has resulted in its refusal to provide us with a sanction for our annual boxing events.  Since the conclusion of the Fourth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities’ tournament, on August 15, 2009,  Deni Auclair (Registration Chair and Treasurer of USA Boxing Metro) and others have work tirelessly to undermine our efforts to develop this tournament and bring amateur boxing into local High Schools.

The First application for sanctioning for the Fifth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships originally scheduled for August 11-14, 2010 was placed with Deni Auclair on September 1, 2009.  These applications along with the Application for our boxing show in Eisenhower Park for July 18 proceeding and promoting the tournament were returned to me in December 2009. In the return letter Deni Auclair make a handwritten note instructing me to “stop sending her certified mail” and resubmit the application after the month of December since it is “too early for sanction request.”  In addition, I was instructed to provide the correct sanctioning fees with a new check as follows since there is a USA Boxing Metro increase in sanctioning fees for clubs:  three hundred fifty ($350) dollars for July 18 club show at Eisenhower Park and five hundred ($500) dollars for Fifth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships scheduled for August 11 - 14, 2010.

The second request for sanctioning for our “Boxing In The Park” and the Fifth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships were sent on March 21, 2010 with checks for $350 and $500 respectively, per Deni Auclair’s instructions.  Since our resubmission for sanctioning, we have received no sanctioning number and the date of our tournament’s final was conveniently given to another club to host its boxing show.  These dates are critical for our tournament promotion and development.  More importantly, LIABC&C has worked tirelessly to establish the final day of it four day tournament as the second Saturday in the month of August.  To this end, the organization has worked very hard in order to adhere to the rules and regulations of U.S.A Boxing Metro.

In the month of March 2010, we submitted tournament information in the Event Listing Request Form on USA Boxing Metro’s web site to be posted.  Deni Auclair has not posted our tournament information on the website and since our submission we have seen many other boxing shows posted on the website.

It’s time for Deni Auclair to focus on her job, which is to support boxing clubs that are promoting the benefits of boxing.

February 20, 2010
On Saturday February 20, 2010 the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities Inc. (LIABC&C) was scheduled to host the New York daily News Golden Gloves Boxing tournament on February 17, 2010 at the Five Towns Community Center.  The Daily News canceled the show at around 8:00 PM on February 17, 2010, after the EMT service failed to show up.  It is the policy of the Daily News to have EMT service at all their tournament shows.

We made written request for EMT and Police Services for the February 17th event by the Lawrence Fire Department and Fourth Precinct  respectively on December 27, 2009 (see enclose letters to Chief Michael Sasso and Sergeant Leslie Moulds).  We made follow up calls in the week of the boxing show and was assured that Police and EMT personnel would be present at the event to provide the services as requested.   When the EMT Personnel failed to show up at the boxing show on February 17, 2010 the police officers present and members of the LIABC&C called the Lawrence Fire Department, but were unable to get EMT Personnel to go at the Five Towns Community Center to provide stand by emergency service as previously requested.  We made several calls to neighboring EMT Departments to avoid what could have been a catastrophe at the Five Towns Community since there were over one thousand paid fans waiting to see the anticipated New York Daily News Golden Gloves Tournament.
The Chief of the Lawrence Fire Department failed in its responsibility to protect the community and provide a potentially lifesaving service at our community sponsored event. Following the event, the Chief of the Lawrence Fire Department acknowledges to Dr. Owen Brown Jr. and me that he received the written request in the mail and several phone calls but stated that he “does not respond to voice mail.”  According to The Chief of the Lawrence Fire Department, he is not able to provide the EMT service at our event because it would “eat into their resources.”  The Chief of the Lawrence Fire Department stated that it would cost the department, $50 per EMT personnel for our event, which was expected to last for four fours.  The Chief of the Lawrence Fire Department estimated that his department would have to provide four (4) EMT personnel at our boxing show, and this would cost $200 which he was unable to write into his budget.       When we asked him why he failed to provide us with this information before the event, he was unable to provide an explanation.  He apologized for the hardship his decision had on our event.  He also agreed that he should have made an attempt to inform us of his decision before the event.

When all efforts failed to have EMT service available at the five Towns Community Center on the evening in question, the New York Daily News Golden Gloves officially called off the boxing show and we were faced with the task of refunding the patrons their monies.

Although the absence of the EMT resulted in the cancellation of the Golden Gloves bouts, it offers us the opportunity to put in place guidelines that should prevent the repeat of this fiasco.  Specifically, the Executive Board members of the LIABC&C have committed themselves to working with the Chief of the Lawrence Fire Department and his representatives to ensure that in the future EMT services will be provided and our organization will pay for its services.  Moreover, it is our hope that by working with elected officials, K-12 administrators/teachers, parents, and residents of Nassau County, they will understand the value of our organization’s fight to address childhood obesity and gang violence in our community.  The LIABC&C is utilizing boxing as a positive youth development principle to links children and young adults with mentors from the boxing fraternity.  It is our hope that by working with adult mentors in the gym, young people will learn about the value of hard work and that education is a pathway out of poverty and gang affiliation.
