History
The Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships was established on October 7, 2006 by Michael Carryl at the Kennedy Memorial Park in Hempstead.  The tournament was founded with the following objectives:

1) Assist with the development of boxing in the local areas, and
2) Establish a scholarship fund to support young boxers in their academic aspirations.

The first tournament took a club show format and had seventeen (17) bouts in one night of boxing.  The following year the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships returned to Kennedy Memorial Park in Hempstead and experienced over 400% increase in participation from boxers throughout the North Eastern region of the United States, and the Caribbean island of Jamaica.  The tournament was held over a three day period from Thursday September 27, 2007 thru September 29, 2007.  Two rings were used to accommodate the boxers and complete the tournament over this three day period.

On Saturday December 15, 2007 a meeting was convened at Ishaka William’s Bar and Night Club on Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.  Present at the meeting were officials of USABOXING-METRO INC and friends of Michael Carryl.  Michael opened the meeting and gave his vision of the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and purpose of the meeting.  The group unanimously agreed for the need to organize and establish a viable boxing tournament to support amateur boxing in New York.  The result of this meeting was the establishment of the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities and members elected the first executive governing body and board members.

On August 2, 2008 the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities INC was officially incorporated in the State of New York by Executive Board Member Michael Howard.   The Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships continued to receive an exponential increase in boxing enrollment to the tournament.  The Third Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships registered over 200 boxers from throughout the North Eastern Region of the United States of America and the Caribbean Island of Aruba. The tournament was hosted by the Five Town Community Center on August 14 thru August 16, 2008.

On July 18, 2009 the winners of the 2008 Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities Inc hosted an eleven man team from Ulster Provincial Council, Ireland.  This exchange program is credited to Rich Stoltenborg and Ed Leahy of the Dover Boxing Club in Dover, New Jersey.  This exchange program did not take place by design, but came about due to some difficulty the host team (Dover Boxing Club) was experiencing completing the second show of their planned two dual exchange competitions in New Jersey.  Thanks to James Kenny, a USABOXING official out of New Jersey, who connected Michael Carryl and Rich Stoltenborg of the Dover Boxing Club.  After a brief dialog between Michael and Rich, the second dual exchange program was moved to Long Island, New York.  The winners of the 2008 Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships competed against the visiting team from Ireland.

The Fourth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships was again hosted at the Five Town Community Center in Lawrence, Long Island.  The tournament was extended a fourth day (August 12 thru August 15, 2009) to accommodated the continued growth of boxing participants from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the New England States.  Tournament organizers received in excess of 300 applications of boxers and were forced to stop accepting applications due to the limited capacity of the arena which was unable to hold a third ring.

Under the leadership of Dr. Owen M. Brown, Jr. Director of Education & Scholarships, on the finals of the Fourth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships two deserving young boxers (Edgar Sanchez and Patrick Day of the Freeport PAL and Suffolk PAL respectively) were awarded with $1000.00 scholarship each to help finance their education.
